It is such an enormous waste to manufacture cars that are only used 5-10% of the time and when used carry only one passenger, often in a route that can be traveled by public transportation or bike. The whole market reality should be criticized and the discussion should be re-oriented towards more radical changes to mobility and car ownership. We can probably do just fine if we had 1/3rd the amount of private vehicles on the road. The car industry should downscale. Unemployment and welfare is a political question that can be addressed in many ways, shifting employment to clean technologies and energy conservation being one of them.
